A story of resistance, and melancholy, and being trapped, about making art and love and the intermingling of the personal and the political Beautiful language, as ever from Mr Cruz. 3M, 2W two of the men only in for one scene each Two Sisters and a Piano is about two sisters go figure who are under house arrest in Cuba in 1991 The older sister, Maria Celia, was sentenced for writing a letter of protest, and her younger sister, Sofia, was sent to jail with her Recently they were released.The place of politics in the play is interesting there aren t political debates it sabout oppressive regimes, and the price of stifling a revolution, than it is about any part 3M, 2W two of the men only in for one scene each Two Sisters and a Piano is about two sisters go figure who are under house arrest in Cuba in 1991 The older sister, Maria Celia, was sentenced for writing a letter of protest, and her younger sister, Sofia, was sent to jail with her Recently they were released.The place of politics in the play is interesting there aren t political debates it sabout oppressive regimes, and the price of stifling a revolution, than it is about any particular political stance which isn t to say that it doesn t take sides the government is definitely the Bad Guys The other characters who come in Lieutenant Portuondo, who is in love with Maria Celia The government, as well as his place in the police force, obviously affect his mindset and actions He s a frustratingly inactive character, whose goal of pursuing Maria Celia seems offensive, given her situation and the power discrepancy between them The audience loses respect for him given the weakness of his stance on the issues that mean so much to Maria and Sofia On the page, at least, the play feels both languid and stagnant The two women are trapped in a house a set that should feel open, not claustrophobic, according to stage directions , and the restrictions on their lives becomeandapparent to them and to the audience They keep looking for hope, but ultimately, they end up in the same place they started The weakness of the play for me is that the intrusion the breaking of the initial stasis is unclear, and the build and climax of the play aren t sufficient to support the internal conflict of the main character I d rather be in Maria s mind than in her living room, because nothing much happens there Nonetheless, it is well written, and with the right actors especially two actresses for Maria and Sofia that can bring fire to inactivity and frustration , it could be a wonderful play Ending up enjoying this show Enjoyed designing it as well.
