father and grandfather step in, creating some Christmas magic of the familial kindAlthough familiar with author Mary Higgins Clark s adult suspense novels, I had never picked up one of her picture books, so I wasn t sure what to expect with The Magical Christmas Horse What I found was an emotionally involving family story and engaging holiday tale, all in one I appreciated the way that Clark spun her story, working in not just family love at the Christmas season, but also the idea of belonging in a particular place a heart place I also appreciated Wendell Minor s gouache and watercolor illustrations, which used a real house in his hometown of Washington, Connecticut for the setting, and real people also from Washington for the characters Recommended to anyone looking for loving family stories set at Christmas Yuck A banal story about a toy horse that 8 year old Johnny wants to regift to his little brother Liam Inexplicably, during the five years since Johnny played on this true, especially Christmas wishes Flaccid, banal, ho hum Call me Scrooge, but appeals to believe in something like an airy feel goody spirit of Christmas give me the heebie geebies Is Christmas dream of returning to the home where his father was born in Connecticut comes true His family is off to visit his grandparents for Christmas His grandmother and grandfather live in an old cozy farm house The holiday festivities are reminiscent of an old fashion Christmas, complete with cookies baking and a Christmas tree farm for cutting down their own tree The one thing Johnny remembers that will make this holiday special for his little brother is an old fashion wooden horse that Johnny recalled seeing in his grandparent s attic However, where Johnny searches for the horse, the one he remembered seems to be in a sad state of disrepair Johnny isn t so sure that his brother s Christmas will be as special as he had hoped after all.Of course, all the children s books I ve ever read have seemed to have a happy ending, and this one is no exception It s a nice story, and a beautiful book, but what makes it so special are the gorgeous illustrations The colors and sketches are beautiful and reminded me of quieter and simpler times This book is a keeper I was surprised to like this book as much as I did It was actually the storyline with the older brother and the housethan the one with the wooden horse, but altogether it was just a lovely story. time for Christmas day On the page where Johnny tells his father and grandfather about finding the broken horse, he is sad that he will have to break his promise to Liam, his younger brother, about Liam riding the wonderful horse The emotion is heavy, yet Johnny s father, and grandfather say nothing The next page moves on as if Johnny is okay and not in the depths of despair about not being able to give Liam a Christmas present Yet that is the emotion portrayed on the previous page On the page when Johnny discovers the new wooden horse, there is a picture of the broken one, but the broken one is never directly mentioned on the page The picture feels out of place and would have worked better with a close up picture of the new wooden horseThe paintings are good Overall an okay Christmas book, but not a standout Far from what one may be accustomed to, this Mary Higgins Clark tale is a new Christmas classic for the young and young at heart When a young boy promises his toddler brother them Mary Higgins Clark writes with subdued yet unmistakable beauty, her words blending in a fresh and original tapestry of childhood dreams and the fulfillment of having a wish come true when one s faith begins to wane The Magical Christmas Horse is on par with many classic holiday stories, and I hope young readers never lose contact with it Johnny Alvern, age eight, is thrilled to learn his family will be visiting his father s childhood home in Connecticut this Christmas The last time they went Johnny was only three, but his memories of that time are vivid and exciting, especially of the old hand carved wooden horse he played on while his father pretended to chase him Johnny can t think of a better gift for his three year old brother Liam than that horse, in addition to the wondrous experience of playing together in the old Connecticut farmhouse But after they arrive, Johnny s grandfather tells him the horse is gone It disappeared en route to an antique show last year, and there s no way to track it down Johnny is sad to have his surprise for Liam foiled, but one early morning as he sifts through antiques in the drafty attic searching for a replacement present, he stumbles onto the old wooden horse It was never lost at the antique show as his grandfather feared The horse is worn out and broken, though, nothing like the great toy Johnny remembers He can t give this to Liam But Johnny made a fervent wish back when he first arrived at the farmhouse, hoping in spite of the horse being lost that his idea for Liam s present would somehow work out Johnny loves the old place in Connecticut as much as when he was three, reveling in the daily farming routine, the crisp winter air, and the gorgeous country scenery around him each day His father grew up dreaming of living near a desert and painting professionally in the arid American South, but Johnny s desire is for the down home gentility of rural New England Everyone has a heart home, his father tells him, a place they feel they belong regardless of external factors, and Johnny has found his heart home at his family s old house on the east coast, where his forebears have lived for two hundred sixty five years He wants to give his brother a gift out of that homey treasure trove like the gift the wooden horse was to Johnny when he was three, but it might take a special intervention for Liam to wake up December 25 with the horse tucked under the glistening tree with his name on it Sometimes everything does work out as we wish, and we learn the most important truths about ourselves at the same time At Christmas, it seems any sincere dream has a chance of coming true Wendell Minor is an artiste par magnifique, and his contribution to The Magical Christmas Horse can hardly be overstated The panorama on the front endpaper is a stunner, a swirl of scenic magnificence comparable to the finest images I ve seen in a picture book I could note half a dozen paintings in the book that are nearly as breathtaking, particularly the wide angle rendering on the back endpaper of the comely old farmhouse on Christmas Eve night, luminous pinpoints speckling the satin firmament as a lone shooting star blazes across the midnight blue, a brief sign of the Christmas magic that may bless us, as well, when we least expect it Mary Higgins Clark and Wendell Minor sure are a superb storytelling duo I give The Magical Christmas Horse two and a half stars, and warmly recommend it for those with a soft spot for the joy and anticipation of the holiday season `Ebook ↠ The Magical Christmas Horse ⇪ Johnny s
