Retelling of the Ant and the Grasshopper set in Pre modern China Short and to the point, children will love the pictures displayed as the story progresses They looklike oil paintings than mere pictorials Recommended. mournful as he huddled in the cold, wishing he d listened to the ants This was another fun spin on an older classic The theme, there shall be no fun before the work is done, is one that unfortunately might have dire consequences for the grasshopper I would read this short story to my younger students and ask them how they would have behaved Would they belike ants orlike the grasshopper The extended version of the familiar fable of The Ant and the Grasshopper, set in the courtyard of the old Summer Palace of the Emperor in Dynastic China, the grasshopper seems to believe that he is performing for the Emperor and presumably will be well cared for in return while the ants are under no such illusion and work hard to ensure their survival Both parties attempt to persuade each other, the ants encouraging the grasshopper to plan ahead Target audience Ages 4 8Summary In this somewhat extended version of the familiar fable of The Ant and the Grasshopper, set in the courtyard of the short and they should enjoy themselvesBoth arguments proved true, but in this version there was no animosity, no I told you so moment, the ants simply covered up their hole when the snows appeared and the Emperor retreated to his Winter Palace.Strengths weaknesses The novelty of setting the fable in Ancient China was the primary strength The illustrations of the Emperor s children squatting mesmerized above an active ant trail strained credulity.Personal critique A decent variation on a well known story which could add variety to a collection of fables.Illustrations Nicely illustrated by the author who spent several years living adjacent to the Summer Palace in Bejing while studying scroll making, the best of her illustrations are the landscapes although the majority of her illustrations are somewhat less captivating closeups of the insect characters Title The Ant and the Grasshopper Author Amy Lowry PooleIllustrator Amy Lowry PooleGenre Fable Theme s Balancing ants who are preparing for the winter season to come The Grasshopper, on the other hand, makes no plans for the cold weather to come Will the Grasshopper listen to the ants and prepare for the winter Or will he continue to play and have fun Find out and see what happens to the grasshopper during the cold winter season Professional Recommendation Review 1 Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D Children s Literature The Chinese setting in the Summer Palace near Bejing makes this familiar fable distinctive Beautiful paintings reflect the ancient craft of scroll making Ink and gouache applied to rice paper with traditional Chinese brushes result in a lovely collection of aesthetic pictures Historical Chinese customs and costumes are depicted The grasshopper enjoys his season of leisure amid the elegant pagodas and tranquil countryside, while the ants industriously plan for the cold weather ahead When the Emperor and his entourage leave, the grasshopper is left mournfully huddled beneath the palace leaves wishing he had heeded the ants advice An Author s Note provides factual information about the Summer Palace and the artistic techniques used to produce the book.Professional Recommendation Review 2 Evelyn Romig The Lorgnette Heart of Texas Reviews Vol 13, No 1 This is the familiar Aesop s fable about the lazy grasshopper who refuses to take the advice of his practical ant companions Poole sets her version in the Summer Palace of the Chinese emperor, and the soft colors and stylized drawings fit the Oriental theme of the book nicely The illustrations are really the strong part of this version, for the cautionary tale is moderated somewhat the grasshopper just gets cold but does not die and the forgiveness theme that is often tacked on the ants take the grasshopper in is omitted as well This book would work well in any classroom discussion of famous folklore or fables and especially lends itself to a dialogue about balancing work and pleasure.Response to two professional reviews I agree with both the reviews above I especially like how the second review mentions the theme of the book balancing work and pleasure I think it is very important to read this book to young children to teach them this valuable lesson It is very important to have fun, but there is also a time and place for it Sometimes we have to save the fun and games and do things that areimportant I also like how both reviews mention the illustrations within the book The book is based in China and the illustrations are techniques used in the country The brush strokes and the colors used make it very interesting for children to look at Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and the lesson that was told within it Both reviews seemed to love the book as well, especially the creative illustrations Evaluation of Literacy Elements I think this book is great for all children to listen along too during a read aloud I think this book is not suited for early readers and children under the age of 5 however due to the length of it and certain vocabulary words The theme of the book is very important to teach to our students and children no matter how young old they are This book is also great because it talks about the Chinese culture and uses certain vocabulary words that describe the culture It is a great educational book for all children and it is great to teach another culture while reading the book Fables, as we learned from Norton, are when animal characters talk and act like humans to teach a moral lesson to the reader 207 It is great for students to realize what fables are and the stories that are taught within them Finding the meaning of the story allows the students to closely pay attention and look for context clues to guide them to finding the meaning and overall message Consideration of Instructional Application After I would read this book aloud to my class, I would ask my students to raise their hand if they know of any other animals that prepare in different ways for the winter I would then have the students go back to their seats and draw a picture of an animal preparing for the winter or a certain action they do in the winter Whether that is building a sturdy home, migrating to the South, or hibernating through the winter We would then share our pictures with everyone and gather knowledge about what animals do in the winter season I would then have another discussion with the class about sacrifices they make everyday to do something important Like doing homework instead of playing video games, eating healthy food instead of junk food all the time, or even making your bed doing your chores before you play with your friends This would then teach them that we need to make sure we do the important things first, before we can have fun and do what we enjoy during the winter ants were busy at work trying to collect and store food There was a grasshopper as well, who spent all his time singing and having fun When the grasshopper realized he had no food he asked the ants to spare him some food because he was starving The ants paused their work and asked why the grasshopper had no food, he replied that he spent all his time singing and dancing When the ants were told this they realized that the grasshopper should have worked to gather food they r during the winter ants were learn that sometimes you have to work before you can have fun I love the illustrations in the retelling of the classic Aesop fable I also appreciate the Asian setting, which gives a unique twist to the usual cartoonish depictions of a Western farm setting I felt, however, that the actual retelling of the story fell a bit flat.
