An episodic novella where Li Lin is summoned to a cigar factory to exorcise a harmful demon that is haunting it But of course, the story isn t so simpleLi Lin s adventures can be procedural They feel like a cross between CSI and Ghostbusters, in a sense, with lots of cool lore and martial arts and Daoism Certainly a interesting setting for historical fantasy, rife with opportunity and conflict A good filler between Ghost Eyes and No Face. This short story was an excellent taste of Li Lin s adventures while we wait for the second book Although painfully short I felt it was a satisfying glimpse into our heroine s life roughly one month after the conclusion of The Girl with Ghost Eyes Overall, the connecting metaphor of ride a mule to ride a horse was one we can all relate to, perhaps particularly in the historical setting of the USA during the immigration rush The story s conclusion, most poignantly, was bittersweet The sen This short story was an excellent taste of Li Lin s adventures while we wait for the second book Although painfully short I felt it was a satisfying glimpse into our heroine s life roughly one month after the conclusion of The Girl with Ghost Eyes Overall, the connecting metaphor of ride a mule to ride a horse was one we can all relate to, perhaps particularly in the historical setting of the USA during the immigration rush The story s conclusion, most poignantly, was bittersweet The sentiment of the last two or three pages is what makes Ride A Mule a four star short story Absolutely terrific short story Yes it was unfortunately very short, but in perfect keeping with what I like to think of as the requirements for a good short story Complex characters a feat and a half in a short story, as there is little time to establish characters A good setting this particular short story benefits from the setting established in The Girl With Ghost Eyes, but its features are nonetheless developed further here A developed conflict, plot, and climax Check, check and che Absolutely terrific short story Yes it was unfortunately very short, but in perfect keeping with what I like to think of as the requirements for a good short story Complex characters a feat and a half in a short story, as there is little time to establish characters A good setting this particular short story benefits from the setting established in The Girl With Ghost Eyes, but its features are nonetheless developed further here A developed conflict, plot, and climax Check, check and check again Boroson s excellent protagonist Li Lin carries out a task she is uniquely suited to and contractually bound to perform, given the ending of Ghost Eyes , but how she goes about it and the nature of its resolution represents a natural continuation of her story overall The Chinese mythology is explained just enough to the reader so that it does not come across as an infodump or a lecture, but rather as an exotic, intriguing character in its own right In general, I appreciate when there is some sort of point to a short story Ride a Mule has a profound one, one that makes you think both during and after the story I am fairly impressed that a piece of writing of this length has landed me a book hangover of this magnitude, although perhaps I compounded the problem by reading it directly following Girl With Ghost Eyes and thereby compounding the book hangover I had from that book.I received this short story for free from the author in exchange for writing a ny bad or good review of The Girl With Ghost Eyes, a book I wholeheartedly recommend My thanks to the author for this treat A short story adventure into netherworld of Chinese mythology with Xian Li Lin.Several weeks after the events of The Girl With Ghost Eyes , Xian Li Lin is assigned to perform an exorcism at a nearby factory However, upon Li Lin s initial investigation she finds something very strange about the ghost responsible for terrifying the Chinese laborers I totally devoured this 20 page short story in a single reading Everything I loved about The Girl With Ghost Eyes managed to fit in acon A short story adventure into netherworld of Chinese mythology with Xian Li Lin.Several weeks after the events of The Girl With Ghost Eyes , Xian Li Lin is assigned to perform an exorcism at a nearby factory However, upon Li Lin s initial investigation she finds something very strange about the ghost responsible for terrifying the Chinese laborers I totally devoured this 20 page short story in a single reading Everything I loved about The Girl With Ghost Eyes managed to fit in acondensed format without feeling rushed You can enjoy this short story this without reading The Girl With Ghost Eyes but it will probably make you want to read the first book in the series anyway It s an action packed short story that leaves you wondering how far people are willing to suffer to earn a better living.Pros Political cleverness on the part of the heroine to save face.Martial arts action scenes.A sympathetic view of Chinese migrant workers in the 1890 s.How the meaning of the title fits into the story.Cons I ll let you know when I find one Nice short story entry into the Xian Li lin series Well worth the read Doesn t provide as much background on the Chinese occult as Ghost Eyes, but sheds some light on how Chinese immigrants lived in late 19th century San Francisco. Nice short story I think the author elevate it from a special adventure episode by making its resolution about the disappoinment and harsh conditions of chinese immigrants.I received a free copy of this ebook by the author in exchange of a review of The Girl with Ghost Eyes onThank you It did not, in any case, influenced my opinion. |Download Book ☨ Ride a Mule ☪ A short story that takes place a month or two after the events in THE GIRL WITH GHOST EYES Li lin is called upon to exorcise a strange spirit at a cigar factory but things may not be what they seem A short story and very well written You have to be careful what you brag about, it might give people ideas Li lin is sent to exorcise a cigar factory Quick paced and action packed, her quick think saves anyworkers from getting hurt. Just as awesome as the book, if much shorter. A good little story to follow The Girl With Ghost Eyes A point off for mixing tenses, lack of clarity, and too much explanation which detracted from the flow of the story.
