boyfriend When her troubles begin to spiral out of control and her shining future is jeopardized, Alice feels she has nothing to live for until help appears and shows her a way back from the brink of despair. The plot is well written and totally captivating as Alice desperately struggles to confront her problems head on, only to be overwhelmed by a sense of futility as she grapples with her dark thoughts and despair Lorna Schultz takes the reader into the world of competitive athletics where a serious injury can end a promising future For Alice the loss could finish her chance of a position on the Varsity team at Duke University, and mean returning home in defeat to a broken family she feels has abandoned her The narrative, a page turner from beginning to end, progresses smoothly as events unfold and climaxes in an ending that brings hope in the face of a crisis You only get glimpses into the personalities of Alice s teammates, her family and her boyfriend Jonathan possibly because the narrative is short but straightforward Central to the story Alice McLean, a teen who hides the truth about her dysfunctional family is diligent, feisty, single minded, and independent When her romance with Jonathan heats up, she acts impulsively as jealousy flares, leaving her uncertain about their future Of her loyal and close friends Parmita the goalie on the woman s soccer team is smart, intense and perceptive while Carrie with her offbeat sense of humour is kind and supportive Jonathan although amiable and caring, is like most athletic jocks at this elite high school, focused on his sport letting nothing and no one interfere with his promising future All the main characters add drama and energy to a story that sends strong messages about the dedication and commitment of young athletes, and the support they need to achieve their goals.I thoroughly enjoyed Hoop Dreams and recommend the Podium Academy Series to parents and teens alike Every school day, African American teenagers William Gates and Arthur Agee travel 90 minutes each way from inner city Chicago to St Joseph High School in Westchester, Illinois, a predominately white suburban school well known for the excellence of its basketball program Gates and Agee dream of NBA stardom, and with the support of their close knit families, they battle the social and physical obstacles that stand in their way.
