camp early one morning, a fleeing figure collides into him One look at the man in his arms, and he realizes that the runaway is a slave, and is very ill Confronting the men who were chasing the slave, reveals that they intend to kill the boy, as a plague has hit their town The plague seemed to appear when the boy and his owners, a pair of tinkers, left the town therefore they must have contaminated the town Finding fault with their logic, Coryn holds back an attack from the three men, heals the slave and soon is heading to the town hoping he can help its people Accompanying him is Raffle, the slave No longer ill, the boy is astonishingly beautiful and apparently, since his tinker owners are dead Raff now belongs to Coryn Raffle awakens from his sick slumber to learn that the tall, dark and handsome man attending him is his new master and a mage Joy and fear make a heady mixture, and Raff is determined to help his master in any capacity he can But it is not a slave s place to tell a master what to do, so how can Raff stop Coryn from burning himself out.Mixed point of view gives a wealth of romance and emotional depth to this tale of mystery as the two men and Coryn s new friend, Jon, try to determine the cause of the plague As the victims mount despite the healing mage s best efforts, Raff is sent on a desperate mission Old friends from Dark Heart, the original Amaranth book, appear and all try to fathom the nature of the mysterious plague Heartfelt moments, raw sensuality, and captivating sex scenes are timed appropriately for both the seriousness of the subject matter and the developing love between the two leads All in all a nice meaty addition to the series, but this book definitely works as a stand alone story.Thank you, Thom Lane, for this tale of a gentle soul with a passion to heal finding love with a wild soul who heals with passion Steamy, Engrossing, Esoteric I really enjoy this series The slave relationship is so matter of fact and understood but the love and devotion is still palpable I get sucked into the whole story I keep expecting one or the other to ease up and into a less strict relationship It seems that it would be inevitable when you mix emotions with duty and responsibility When they do someone pays the price and has to be brought back in line, usually painfully for both sides in different ways I didn t expect to see Lucan and Tam a ease up and into a less strict relationship It seems that it would be inevitable when you mix emotions with duty and responsibility When they do someone pays the price and has to be brought back in line, usually painfully for both sides in different ways I didn t expect to see Lucan and Tam again but it was a nice surprise especially since they did not play a small role They actually have a bit of time with us in this book to renew our acquaintance I did hope that Coryn would learnabout the possibilities for his own relationship with Raff by his time spent with Lucan and Tam but that wasn t really what came out of the relationship The author bio says the author writes other genres under other names I would be interested to know what else s he writes under so that I could check them out I went looking for the backlist after Dark Heart came out and found nothing so it must just be the three Loose ID books under this pseud for now Another four stars Another winning gem Though, less dramatic than the first I still like it for the different pace it set It was a little bitgentle than the first As in, Coryn s a new master mage and hasn t had a slave in awhile so he s less quick with the switch and punishment although he does catch up One thing I like about this series is the clever mysteries it presents for us to work out I think Thom Lane is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors This book is set in the same world as Dark Heart Like the previous book this is not really a romance or a bdsm story, in fact as it s set in a world where slavery is a reality, there can be no real romance between master and slave, as there is no equality And it s not true bdsm as there is no consent required or given If that disturbs you, it s probably not for you If you can look upon it as an interesting concept, as a fantasy background then you might enjoy it too.Coryn is a young mage h This book is set in the same world as Dark Heart Like the previous book this is not really a healer, just recently finished his training and out wandering the world Raff is a slave boy just a little younger than Coryn He literally runs into Coryn in the road when he s sick near to death with plague, and being chased by some men who want to put him out of his misery Coryn heals Raff, claims his as his own since his owners are dead of the plague , and take him off to try and deal with this plague outbreak that started in the nearby town But Coryn is only one healer on his own, and young, and it s soon clear that he ll never be able to cope with this task on his own, despite Raff doing his best to help his new master And then there is the mystery of where this plague came from in the firstplace. The relationship between Coryn and Raff was actually quite sweet, as Coryn is so young, and doesn t seem naturally dominant At times it was possible to forget they weren t equal beings in their society. As a nice bonus, later in the story, Lucan and Tam from the previous book appeared This was great, as the ending to their story left things quite open, and it was good to see how their relationship had progressed off screen.See my other reviews of the Tales of Amaranth series 1 Dark
