Think ComiCon , where our heroine, Emma, an investigative reporter who s hanging onto her career by a thread, is supposed to sniff out a good story She finds one in Luke Evans, AKA Luke Blaster, the author of the much beloved sci fi novels, Farmen Blaster has done the unthinkable and has killed off the hero of the Farmen series and is at Comicon, uh GalaxyCon to try to soothe ruffled feathers and do some damage control Emma and Luke are both trying to do their respective jobs, but attraction and rabid, vengeful fans make things hard The retaliation from the Farmen Fans comes in the form of LARP s, or Live Action Role Playing The angry geeks fans insist on dragging Luke and Emma into the role playing, forcing them to be the characters, Ben and Mia.Eli slid out of the elevator, crouching again Luke casually followed, concealing the plastic laser against his pants Eyebrows raised in their direction as Eli checked every possible threat, flipped around corners and occasionally somersaulted across a hallway to the other wall.It was absurd Theantics Eli did, thepeople stopped and stared at Luke With a strained smile, he fought to keep the heat from rising up his neck.Beyond the funny and clever sci fi fan stuff, there s a story here of grief and guilt and ambition and love I thought it was well done and different from the romances that I usually read [[ E-PUB ]] ☔ Defying Convention ☔ Journalist Emma Portland would do anything to save her career, even go undercover at the st Annual GalaxyCon in search of a story Emma thinks she s hit pay dirt when she meets well over a decade ago when I picked up a friend at Comic Con in Atlanta You better believe that when I got a good look at the costumes going in and out of the convention center I decided that I would just slow down and my friend could jump in the moving car I was NOT stopping So I have a lot in common with Emma Portland, the heroine of Abby Niles Defying Convention She s an investigative journalist for the biggest paper in Atlanta woo hoo, Hotlanta , and after screwing up her last expos , her boss has given her the kiss of death find a story at the 31st annual GalaxyCon Emma only knows a little about these conventions, and what little she knows comes from her brother, Eddie, who attends lots of Cons and is the creator of a popular online role player game Emma is following her brother around but having no success getting story ideas when Eddie informs her that to get the best scoops, she needs to pose as a native Thus she finds herself dressed as Princess Leia And not Princess Leia in a white robe with buns on her head, Princess Leia in a boobalicious metal bikini Helloooo, ladies As Emma and Eddie are leaving their hotel room with her dressed in her cringe inducing costume, they witness a guy being attacked by a Furry person dressed as an animal with certain sexual proclivities that are not delved into in this book, thank goodness with a Styrofoam sword, and while I d like to say that Styrofoam sword isn t a euphemism, it probably is meant to have some sort of Freudian meaning Emma hates bullies, so she joins the fray by yanking the sword away from the Furry and beating him over the head with it To her surprise, Eddie thinks that the man under attack, author Luke Blaster, deserves everything he s getting Luke Evans writes the Farmen Galaxy books under the name Luke Blaster, and he made the bold move of killing off the hero of his books, Ben Frank, in the last book Now his name is mud, and he is sooooo not popular at this convention Luke and Emma have definite sparks I m sure the metal bikini helps , but she s torn She s attracted to Luke, but if she can get the scoop on his enigmatic book dedications and why he killed off his hero, she can salvage her career Her boss is breathing down her neck, and she s definitely going to be out on her bum if she doesn t get a good story To make matters worse, Luke makes it clear that he despises reporters, just as Emma s rival reporter makes an appearance There s definitely a story here, but should Emma follow her heart or her dream of being a great reporter I love the choice of a sci fi convention as setting for this contemporary romance, and Abby Niles does a great job of incorporating the Con culture into the book Live Action Role Play LARP takes a central stage in encouraging the romance between Luke and Emma, and the fans of Luke s Farmen Galaxy are a hoot I am certainly sympathetic to their outrage over his killing off the hero, and their various forms of revenge are pretty darn funny And the scene with the Vulcan Karaoke was a riot, even though I ve done the Rocky Horror Picture Show Time Warp myself and am not sure that I d qualify it as arousing as it is here The romance itself is sweet and entertaining Emma s drawn to Luke, who s got a tortured past, and the conflict of heart over work is one many can relate to There s a nice secondary romantic conflict between Eddie and his ex wife Fiona that mirrors the conflict Emma s experiencing, since Fiona left Eddie because he wasfocused on developing his game than his marriage Eddie continually encourages Emma to take a chance with Luke instead of focusing on her career, pointing out how unhappy his past mistakes have made him Eddie s wooing of his ex wife Fiona during a role playing game was sexy, awkward, and adorable, and you re rooting for this couple as much as for the hero and heroine When Luke finally opens up to Emma about his traumatic past, you agonize with her, because she s found place herself in such a difficult postion She s in love with Luke and knows that he will consider her silence about her profession a betrayal Luke s pain at her actions is palpable, but the conclusion is highly satisfactory.I really enjoyed this novel, but I do have a few minor complaints The first has to do with some of the language in the novel Overall the book is well written, but there was one point where Eddie describes Emma as angsted up that actually made me cringe The phrase is such a trivial thing to criticize that I hesitate to mention it, but it was such a jarring note that it distracted me from the story for a moment The fact that this was the only time the language disrupted my reading of the book should indicate that the rest of the novel was smoothly written, I think. My only other complaint is that the rival reporter competing with Emma, Lila O Brien, is a bit of a caricature She s so evil and ruthless while the other supporting characters are so well rounded that as a character she falls a bit flat You definitely will love to hate her, and it s very satisfying to see her get her come uppance in the end, but she s a little too one dimensional, especially when compared to Cecil, the farmen fan who aids her in her expos. But if you haven t guessed so far, I really loved this book It had a great romance with a tortured hero and a hysterically funny setting This is the first contemporary romance set at a Sci Fi convention that I ve seen and the choice of setting was absolutely brilliant Definitely check this one out I received this book for is In the most recent Farmen book, Luke killed off his hero, Ben Frank And killing Ben has gotten Luke about the same reaction that killing Sherlock Holmes got Conan Doyle except with new technology Sales of the book have tanked The Farmen Fan Organization has organized hate mail campaigns in every possible media Luke s career might be over So Luke is at the con to see if he can salvage anything from his self created mess.Emma Portland is an investigative journalist whose last several investigations have been scooped by rivals at other news agencies Her hated editor has sent her undercover to the con with the promise that if she finds a story, she can keep her job, and the threat that if she doesn t, she s fired and blackballed Her editor expects her to fail.Eddie, Emma s brother, is back at a con for the first time in two years He is Emma s guide to the geek scene Eddie used to go to all the cons with his ex wife, but when his game design company becameimportant than his marriage, Fiona left him Now Eddie is rich, but lonely And he sees Fiona everywhere he turns He also sees Emma making the same mistake he made, putting a job she that may not be right for her ahead of what is really important. In order to work undercover, Eddie gets his sister dressed up as Princess Leia The early version, with the white dress and her hair in the side buns That costume is a classic When Emma steps out of an elevator and sees Luke being beaten by a group of guys with Nerf swords, she immediately gets in the way She doesn t know about his book, and too many against one just isn t fair in her book.Luke is fascinated by the only woman at the entire con who doesn t know who he is and hasn t pre judged him Emma senses a story, but is equally fascinated by the man behind it.Meanwhile, the Farmen Fan Organization decide to teach Luke Blaster the error of his ways, live and in person They decide to run a LARP, that s Live Action Role Playing game, as part of the con, casting Luke Blaster as his dead hero, Ben Frank Emma s new involvement with Luke means that she has cast herself as Ben s love interest, Mia Marrows. The LARP, the books, the con, and the so called real world overlap each other, as Eddie, Luke and the Farmen Fan Organization each use the LARP to attempt to teach various characters different lessons, sometimes at the same time It turns ugly when Emma s journalist rival turns up, and everyone s real secrets come out.The romance part of this is fun to read I enjoyed these people, and I wanted them to get their happily ever after The secondary characters, too This was one where all the characters had some stuff they needed to work through, and the story really shows how they got where they are, and that they earned their reward.I picked this up because it takes place at a science fiction convention There were a lot of years when I regularly attended at least three science fiction conventions every year and I have friends who have organized cons So I know too much about the setting, and this didn t quite match If you re looking for a book that gives the flavor of a science fiction convention, the best book is still probably Bimbos of the Death Sun by Sharyn McCrumb It s a murder mystery where the famous sci fi author is so hated he gets murdered at the beginning and the rest of the book is about the new sci fi author amateur investigator The description of the murdered author was so true to life that a very real and very much alive famous author received a number of copies of the book out of concern at the time it was published I ll leave you to guess who that was Hint he s still alive Short romance based on the world of a s I fi convention A reporter is undercover to get a story but getsthan she bargained book, he is ignorant of cons and has much to learn about that world and the devotion of genre fans It pokes gentle fun at SF F readers and fans In Galaxy Quest , you see a con from the perspective of the former stars of a beloved sci fi show that s been off the air for years We also see the lengths to which fans go, something that plays an important part in Defying Convention I was excited by the choice of a sci fi con as the setting for contemporary romance, it s not common and I enjoy cons in real life Niles does a reasonably good job of incorporating con culture into the book Live Action Role Play LARP , a staple of many cons, is central to the evolution of the romance between Luke and Emma To be honest, I found many of the events and actions done in the guise of LARP to be absurd or just stupid It wasn t, in my opinion, the best use of LARP in a story However, I should also state up front, that I ve never played either a LARP or an RPG which also figures into the story I have friends and acquaintances who do but my knowledge is basically second hand. The story had a good beginning, an average middle, and a weak ending The romance was sweet and believable but there were some problems I m not a fan of the big misunderstanding trope in romances and I think that the story could have been done as well or better without it Emma s rival reporter, Lila O Brien, is a caricature Cubby, formerly a huge fan of Luke s, and still the president of Luke s fan club, feels deeply betrayed and goes to idiotic, incredibly stupid lengths to obtain revenge He s every cliche and stereotype of the obsessed, nerdy, sci fi geek who has no life, mashed together In the end, Niles allows Cubby aka Cecil to redeem himself and he even seems like a nice, normal fellow He plays a critical role in Luke and Emma coming together Unfortunately, it s a bit deux ex machina but in the end, everyone, even the fans, get their HEA Finally, the LARPing did not feel like an accurate portrayal As I said earlier, I don t LARP or RPG but I have friends and acquaintances who do plus I ve attended many cons over the years Niles has used the author s prerogative of twisting facts, in this case how these games are played and acceptable behavior, to suit her story If you don t know anything about LARP s or RPG s I suggest you ignore the info contained in this book and find someone who actually plays to answer your questions Delicious Romance for the Girl Geek or Geek LoverEmma Portland has this one chance at rescuing her career as an investigative journalist But being assigned punishing LARP of a lifetime These aren t usually the things a great romance is made of and that is exactly why this one works While I ve never been to a Con I loves me some geekery and Niles manages to make this dose smart, sexy and hilarious Luke is one yummy specimen, if a bit angry and angsty for my taste Emma is a little cliched but still enjoyable I really wish she d beengeeky My only real issue with either character was their lack of geekness At times it kinda felt like someone had kidnapped the quarterback and the cheerleader and dumped them into the chess club which as a real life girl geek was a little disheartening But as the story progressed Luke s writing and secrets revealed him to be a mix of geek and regular guy that actually worked Emma s only real geekery seemed to stem from having a super nerd brother who helped her pass at the convention One note there I wonderedthan once why Luke didn t call Emma on her presence at the Con if she was so unlikely to be there with her lack of fandom.Even with my little issues there I really think this was a great, if predictable, tale It inspired a great range of emotions and plenty of LOL moments By the end I was very satisfied To be honest it wouldn t be completely off base to say that if you liked the very based idea behind the film Never Been Kissed this runs in a similar vein I loved it If you re a geek and enjoy romances I highly recommend this one I am adding Abby Niles to my authors to watch list This would be a great book for Codex from The Guild to read and if you get that reference get this book
