Fablehaven quintilogy , I was a little anxious about this series Fablehaven was so vivid, imaginative, and bloody FUN, with a nice dark streak running right through it, how could any other series hope to compare And so with lowered expectations I marched off to the library and gave it a go Yet even with lowered expectations, Beyonders 1 seems really generic to me Yep, there s a dark wizard Yes, lowered expectations, Beyonders 1 seems really generic to me Yep, there s a dark wizard Yes, they wear old timey clothes and there s no technology You already knew what this world would be before you opened the book But knowing Mull, you expect there to be some amazing additions to this tired genre, right I got the sense that for much of the time, Mull expects you to fill in the gaps for a lot of the detail They walked a long time and saw some trees and dirt and stuff, and then saw a dilapidated building, and a guy working in some old timey clothes who looked at them with suspicion Okay, that s not an actual quote, but at times it seems pretty close If this were another author, and if this were a stand alone book, I probably would have given this a two star review Fortunately, there is a second book which is MUCH better and I waited to read it before reviewing this one I do recommend this series to Fablehaven fans, but if you re new to Mull, you shouldn t start with this one For what they are, middle school age books, they do a good job of giving a story that is fairly complex and mature Obviously, compared to adult books, they feel very naive and simple, but they aren t really meant to be compared It is a standard boy and girl get transported to another world and have to become its saviors, especially since no one in that world wants to stand up against the evil magical emperor Maldor, who has killed all the other wizards who might stand up to him The books flow For what they are, middle school age books, they do a good job of giving a story that is fairly complex pretty well, although the second one felt kind of forgettable to me Ironically, despite the first book being called a world without heroes, there are several characters that are heroic, almost too heroic Prince Galloran feels like an old blind Aragorn who kept all his sword skills Personally, I don t really like it when someone, especially some kid, goes to another world and suddenly is declared to be its hero and everyone worships them, even though they don t actually do much Narnia, Thomas Covenant, etc The main characters Jason and Rachel go to Lyria, full of magic and warriors, and immediately get sent on a quest to kill the emperor It would be like some caveman being sent to our time and being enlisted in special ops with an emphasis in computer hacking Rachel does eventually learn magic, but Jason proves fairly useless, aside from a few bright ideas By the end, several characters die, but many of them are filler characters that barely get a eulogy when killed In fact, many are drinlings, who have like a two year life span, so obviously if they die, its not important It felt kind of callous, in a way For some reason as well, I didn t really connect with the characters and wasn t that invested in them And the ending didn t feel as impossible as it was made out to be But there were some good ideas, like the displacers who can be fully functional while severed from body parts, or the amar who have a seed on their neck and can get planted once they die, resulting in almost immortality Anyway, if you like young adult fantasy, it is pretty good If not, you might not become fully invested The beyonders seeds of rebellionfantasy483 pages The seeds of rebellion is the second book in the series The Beyonders It is the story of a boy and a girl, Rachel Galloran the blind king, and all of the sylablle holders Sylablle holders are chosen people who hold and keep secret a part of The Word throughout Lyrian They meet with the seed people, zombies and Lurkers I really like this book because it has a great plot and I always would want to read it I think it was a good length at 483 pages because I got really into the book and read it in a few days but it wasnt to short that I could read it in 3 days or less My favorite part of this book or most memorible was when Galloran fought the lurker and killed it because it was action packed and I couldnt stop reading it My second favorite part was when they were crawling through a canyon on a ledge that was very high They were crawling because it was so windy and they couldnt stand up It was probably my second favorite because it got my heart racing and I was relieved when they got through the canyon even though they had to fight a hoard of angry zombies filled with worms I really want to read the third book because I love the author Brandon Mull and I think he will have a great third book Loved Brandon Mull s Fablehaven Series and was happy to find this other series by accident at the library Great read, intriguing story line There were so many unexpected twists and turns throughout this 3 book series that I only wish it had gone on longer I think there is easily enough material to continue on to at least onebook if the author ever wished to really tie off all loose ends. was quite the surprise Read this Even though I preferred Fablehaven, this series is just as creative and just as suspenseful I love how Mull doesn t waste much time on sappy teen romance You don t
