Benice, by Metin Karayaka, one gets two bangs for his expectant buck One great story, and many wonderful illustrations by Rohan Daniel Eason Both the story and the illustrations are reminiscent of their classic predecessors such as Robert Luis Stevenson s Kidnapped but without the baggage for some of a now considered antiquated style A mysterious old fisherman, an impressionable young boy, the suggestion of pirates in the wings These are the elements enticing the aforementioned reader to Come aboard Ben Ice, an old, reclusive, gossiped about fisherman with one hook for a hand, a peg leg for a leg, a patch for one eye, and a parrot perched on his shoulder, is a character who bodes well for Metin Karayaka s great story, Benice I m sure one can speculate on Mr Ice s true profession, even without the grand illustrations provided by Mr Eason The young boy, Levend, who retells his tale later on in life, comes to the longed for revelation appetizingly late in his telling One has come to suspect by then that Ben Ice is but an allegory for old ways and somewhat nasty things, but then the plot thickens, our boat is twisted sideways, and we are suddenly face to face with Ah, but there be no spoilers here, matey This is a story for us kids Told by one great storyteller And great expectations are duly rewarded with ample buried treasure I think it s a particular young person who would really love this book There s some awkwardness to the writing style I kept asking myself whether it was translated and a bit of silliness and old fashioned sensibility that might not gel with current kids, though the fast pace and multiple points of view do keep things interesting The moral of the story ending felt somewhat trite, and the relationships didn t feel overly deep The illustrations do reminiscent Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC Benice, A light hearted adventure of love and friendship, by Metin Karayaka, is a 225 page book targeting middle school and young teen aged readers It tells it certainly shows Lots of fun imagination was put into the book, and I can see myself reading this one again and again. The story examines how people often unfairly judge one another, due to their appearance and mannerisms, without giving any thought as to what their past was truly all about Those lessons are woven into the very fabric of this story and reverberate with the message of being kind to others The ending was quite satisfying and reading how this story brought the characters together shows just how people can mend their differences and move on, if they so choose There were a few hints at the end of a sequel, but this story certainly stands on its own as a complete tale Benice, A light hearted adventure of love and friendship, by Metin Karayaka, is highly recommended A cute little story about love and friendship, and also about judging based on appearances I read it in two sittings and only because I had a schedule to keep But as soon as I was able, I got back to it and finished it I enjoyed the story throughout, although I wasn t entirely clear on everything that happened in the end The lessons on friendship and treating others with kindness may come off as a bit heavy handed silly for some people, but it s a very positive book and we probably needA cute little story about love and friendship, and also about judging based on appearances I read it in two the end, I thought I might be missing something, but it didn t really take away from the rest of the story I enjoyed the illustrations and thought they really added to the story The characters are likeable, and there s enough pirate adventure to keep the action moving throughout It feels a little bit like a cross between Treasure Island and a Chinese folk tale There were a couple places in the book where some Chinese characters appeared, and I m not sure if that was deliberate or an accident in this ARC since there was no translation that came with it Overall, I very much enjoyed this quick read Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review This is the kind of story we needof Positive about life, with an almost fairy tale quality to it I thoroughly enjoyed it myself, and have passed it on to my 11 year old granddaughter The illustrations help support the story and add a bitspice to it Reads smoothly, well edited, with no grammar errors or misspellings Would love to seebooks from Metin. Swashbuckling and silly, I loved this book It is a great young reader tale with a sort of foolish, magical quality Or rather, expect to suspend disbelief The text is really good, with nice pacing and appealing turns of phrase, but the illustrations are wonderful I finished this book quickly and am now planning to get the book for the young readers in my life Thanks to NetGalley for the free copy for an honest review. This was a lovely story sure to become a classic The action is balanced with magical wonder and friendship It was a pure joy to read. Karayaka weaves an original story and high stakes in this action packed story filled with twists and turns No situation or character are as they first appear, and this keeps the reader guessing throughout Friendship, love, sacrifice, and loyalty are key themes.I was a bit put off, though, by a seeming lack of consequences for heroic characters who do bad things for the sake of a positive outcome In other words, the message that kids may walk away with is that the ends justify the means Also, Karayaka weaves an original story and high stakes in this action packed story filled with Also, the ending was less than satisfying I understand that the author was probably trying to leave a few things up in the air in case there is a sequel, but I was genuinely confused for the last three or four pages All in all, a quick and easy summer read I recommend reading aloud, especially to young children, to be able to take the opportunity to discuss the sometimes shady actions of the book s heroes I wrote this review in exchange for a review copy from NetGalley and was not influenced in any way This opinion is solely my own (FREE DOWNLOAD) ⛑ Benice: An Adventure of Love and was a 14 year old boy How he traveled with Mr Ben and how his friendship and love for him grew Mr Ben became a father like figure for him I thought it was so heartwarming I also really enjoyed Orion, although I wish there wasback and forth between his side and Levends Mr Ben is also a fantastic character, mysterious and secretive You can t ask for true friendship, because it s not something anyone can just give It grows over time Overall, I did enjoy Benice A very heartwarming story that leaves you with a lovely message Love, friendship, deceit, betrayal play a major role in Benice The way that Karayaka can weave the words in this book is truly remarkable But for his sake, above all of that, be nice Want to readreviews Check out the blog Bexyish Blog
