with my pioneer ancestors settling Dixie in the 1860s But thanks to my friend, Alan, who gave me this 480 page book, I learned muchabout him I was especially fascinated by the way he advocated for the native inhabitants mostly the Paiutes and told Brigham Young that Mormon settlement was destroying the Indian way of life Definitely a different perspective I m proud of his independent thought He did not necessarily change the grim outcome for the native people, but he tried I was very impressed with his toughness and his mediation skills I was not so impressed with his fatherhood of 20 children I d just read It probably took me 4 months to read But then, I enjoyed reading it this way Jacob Vernon Hamblin is my great x4 grandfather, and I purchased this book on the recommendation of a cousin I thoroughly enjoyed reading about aspects of Hamblin s family life, and learning of his legacy of a peacemaker with the Indians The balanced view of Hamblin s spiritual, personal, and professional life was greatly appreciated, since the author compared various writings of the time.
